H1 Tags and Homepage PageRank

Our next few posts will dispel a number of SEO myths that have been plaguing our efforts to teach and educate America to have a transparent and clear understanding of what SEO is really all about. Additionally, let me also take a moment to encourage you to pick up the phone, and ask one of our search engine optimization experts about anything here, or anything else you might have heard regarding search engine optimization.

• H1 tags are a crucial element for SEO. Here at New Pulse Management, we typically start the SEO process by providing a website analysis for a new potential client. It’s a good way to not only be transparent, but also show our client what their ground zero (or current position) looks like. This way, they know exactly where they stand before we ever even start the process, and thereby, can truly show a client how much they’re position is improving. I can’t tell you how often we’ve come to notice that people have no H1 tags on their page at all when we run these reports, which never fails to impress me. Granted, H1 tags used to be more important in previous years than now, but they should still exist in the domain. Like I said, lately they are only a minor signal, but at least have them present. They’re easy to implement, and you should do anything you can to improve your position, as in today’s environment, search engine optimization and web design strategy’s and methods have become so competitive, you need to be ubiquitous in your approach. If you want
to know exactly what kind of impact they have, see for yourself; try taking a site with headlines marked up with a font tag and turn that tag into an H1 in the template — without changing the copy within the headlines (or anything else for that matter) — and see what happens to your rankings. I’m the first to admit you’ll find the results to be very unimpressive, but any change at all is something that should be embraced in a fight that’s this competitive…especially if your industry is a tough one, like a mortgage company in LA. Ask our friendly search engine optimization experts to examine your domain, prepare a website analysis for you, and determine what (if any) improvement, you may be able to apply to your current efforts by adding H1 tags and headings to the code. Even if it’s minor, with SEO, every little bit helps, and anything that can make a difference, should be embraced.

• Homepage Page Rank on a domain means something important. I admit we’re being a little bit ‘nit-picky’ here, but it’s important to remember that Page Rank at Google, is different than the average tool bar Page Rank. This isn’t to say that toolbar Page Rank is completely useless, it certainly has a purpose, and at least gives us an idea, but it’s a
different analysis than the one Google is truly using to assess us. At a minimum, I wouldn’t bet my business on that little green meter on my Google Toolbar.

Additionally, since when is describing an entire site by a page-specific metric such as Page Rank accurate? There are so many other factors at play. As an indicator of domain-wide importance/ trust/authority I’d take domain mozRank any day over a single page’s (truncated, possibly randomized Page Rank number, because as we’ve stated in the past, Google is not going to inject their super secret algorithm into everyone’s browser that downloaded or installed the Google Toolbar) Page Rank score. Our SEO experts can certainly help you improve your position, but also consider our asking our web design team about your overall foundation. We welcome the opportunity to work with you. We’d additionally be happy to prepare an initial website analysis to give you a good idea of where you stand initially, so you can gauge how much your improving as a member of New Pulse Management, every step of the way throughout the process.
